A Couples Weekend in Elk Rapids: Where to Stay, Eat & Explore

A Couples Weekend in Elk Rapids: Where to Stay, Eat & Explore

Tucked between Grand Traverse Bay and Elk Lake, Elk Rapids is one of Northern Michigan's most charming small towns. With walkable streets, waterfront sunsets, cozy wine bars, and endless opportunities to slow down together, it's the perfect destination for a romantic weekend away!

Whether you're celebrating an anniversary or escaping for a spontaneous summer getaway, here's how we'd spend a weekend in Elk Rapids for two!

WHERE TO STAY

The Dexter Hotel

We love this mid-century modern inspired, 29-room boutique hotel right in the heart of Elk Rapids. Its newly redesigned property offers clean, re-imaged rooms that celebrate Michigan artisans and designers. Check in/out is virtual and the property offers on-site parking and the Noble Club for a cocktail overlooking the water.

FRIDAY

Dinner & Drinks at Cellar 152

Start your weekend at Cellar 152.

Located in the heart of downtown (right around the corner from The Dexter!), this cozy wine bar and restaurant serves elevated comfort food, curated wines and craft cocktails in a beautifully restored historic building. They also have live music on Friday nights from 6-9pm and be sure to hit the market on your way out for any provisions you may want for your hotel room!

After dinner, head across the street to Ice Cream Peddlers for a scoop and a stroll along River Street toward the beach to watch the sunset over Grand Traverse Bay.

antrm. note: if you arrive early in the day on Friday, be sure to check out the Elk Rapids Farmers Market that runs from 8am - noon.

SATURDAY

Slow Start

If you’re feeling zen, start your day with a Vinyasa Flow class at Elk Rapids Yoga Flow. Then head over to Happy Camper Coffee for a coffee and breakfast burrito. Or skip the workout and head straight to Michiganders Bakery for a donut (hey, you’re on vacation!)

Browse local shops, admire the historic buildings, and enjoy the slower pace that makes Elk Rapids so special.

antrm. notes: be sure to wander through Harbor Antiques Mall. There are so many treasures to explore!

Beach Time

Spend the late morning at Dam Beach for fewer crowds but the same crystal-clear water and sandy shoreline that youll get at the Day Park. Bring a towel, a good book, and nowhere to be.

Lunch Break

Head over to the DAM Shop for a casual lunch, lawn games, and a cold drink. It’s located right at Elk Rapids Marina so you can watch the boats come and go!

Paddle the Bay

Plan ahead and rent SUPs from Bayfront Beach and Bike. Spend the rest of the day exploring the bay from the water.

Casual Dinner at Short’s Pull Barn

After a day on the water, throw on your flip flops and a hoodie, skip the makeup and hair - keep it casual! Head to Short’s Pull Barn for a very casual dinner and local beer. Think: picnic tables, food trucks, live music, and a great time!

antrm. note: If you’re up for a nightcap, head to Ethanalogy for a locally distilled craft cocktail, great vibes and friendly people!

SUNDAY

Walk of Art

Head to the Day Park and wander through the Walk of Art Sculpture Park.

Goodies for Home

As you head out of town and back to reality, be sure to hit family farm, Altonen Orchards, to stock up on incredible in-season local produce.

Elk Rapids is the perfect setting for quality time!
